One of the reasons I enjoy graphic novels is the ability to read a complete story without waiting a months for each chapter (and forgetting what it was all about). I enjoyed this whole run of Wonder Woman, but the reasoning to split the arcs into separate graphic novels is confusing and surprising. Wonder Woman, Volume 4: Godwatch by Greg Rucka (illustrated by Bilquis Evely, Mirka Andolfo, Nicola Scott, Scott Hanna, Mark Morales, Andrew Hennessy, Raúl Fernandez) continues the story-line which bridges the Year One narrative to current date. Then he receives a taunting letter from Mr Mercedes, an attempt to goad him into suicide. Years later, retired detective Bill Hodges's failure to capture the Mercedes Killer haunts him as he drifts through his days on a diet of junk food and daytime television. The book begins with a bang, recounting the senseless slaying of eight people by Brady Hartsfield, committed by ploughing a stolen Mercedes into a crowd. Instead 'Mr Mercedes' recounts the good versus evil battle of Bill Hodges, a retired police officer, and Brady Hartsfield, a computer genius with a bad Oedipal complex and an even worse loathing of humanity. No clowns, no haunted hotels, no Boo'ya Moon. Fans of his horror and supernatural titles won't find their familiar fare here. It's been a while since I wrote a book review, and 'Mr Mercedes' by Stephen King is a worthy way to resume! The novel is King's venture into straight crime thrillers, the first of a trilogy. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Temptation by K.M. ScottThe 1967 Summer of Love brought national attention and popularized the counterculture movement. In the 1960s, the district became a haven for hippies due to the availability of cheap rooms and vacant properties, turning it into a center for counterculture, drugs, and music. However, the neighborhood faced decline during the Depression and post-WWII period. Initially a collection of isolated farms and sand dunes, the area transformed into a popular entertainment destination after the completion of the Haight Street Cable Railroad in 1883. Named after pioneer Henry Haight and San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Munroe Ashbury, the neighborhood has played a significant role in the city's history. Haight-Ashbury is bounded by Stanyan Street, Golden Gate Park, Oak Street, the Golden Gate Park Panhandle, Baker Street, Buena Vista Park, Frederick Street, and the Ashbury Heights and Cole Valley neighborhoods. The neighborhood is known as one of the main centers of the counterculture of the 1960s. It is also called The Haight and The Upper Haight. Haight-Ashbury ( / ˌ h eɪ t ˈ æ ʃ b ɛr i, - b ər i/) is a district of San Francisco, California, named for the intersection of Haight and Ashbury streets. This novel was originally published as a two-part serial in Astounding Science Fiction, in April and May of 1942. That should not surprise many people, since RAH has been accused many times of being a misogynist, an opinion I do not share concerning the full body of his work, but which was a bit of a problem for him in his early stories. Another is the way he portrayed the relationships between the men and women. First, a lot of the conversations are filled with colloquiallisms obviously common to RAH from his own Midwest experience, but it is not likely many of them would have survived into his futuristic society. In my opinion, there are only two things to criticize about this book. On the other hand, I feel he approached the work as one representative of life in general rambling, with various highlights at different times, without a discernible goal in sight. Yes, it is atypical for a Heinlein story, with quite a few anti-climaxes along the way, and one might get the impression RAH couldn't decide on which part of the plot he should concentrate. There have been frequent criticisms of Beyond This Horizon for being a bit rambling and incohesive, several reviewers citing it as Heinlein's weakest effort. Vastly influential in the genre, as paperback horror shelves started filling up with books adorned with endless possessed little girls in frilly smocks and Mary Janes, The Exorcist helped make satanism and the occult everyday notions. I know, I know, that old argument: what makes horror fiction, well, horror? The Exorcist has some of the most infamous moments of shock and terror in popular culture, but is horrifying readers its sole raison d'être? I'd argue non. Perhaps even more so, because I'm not even sure The Exorcist, the fifth novel from William Peter Blatty, is a horror novel. If you were of an impressionable age at the time, surely the iconic imagery of the book alone made a nightmarish impact, even if you didn't read it. The exotic, sibilant title- exorcist-why, the word itself sounded evil. The unfocused cover photograph of a young girl in torment. Millions of copies adorning nightstands and coffee tables everywhere.
